Although they’re available year-round, I just love utilizing my favorite variety of apples come fall. Whether it’s from apple picking at an orchard or picking up some extra apples at a farmer’s market, it just screams coziness to me.

You might remember these baked apples with granola from a while back. It was my first time trying this version, but definitely not the last.

Enter this air fryer baked apple recipe. Not only is it incredibly simple to make, but it tastes very similar to apple pie filling, but without all of the prep work of filling in a pie. In fact, this is my new favorite way to use up a bundle of apples.

It’s cozy, filled with warm apple pie spices, and perfect when served with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream.

How to Cook Baked Apples in the Air Fryer:

  • Peel, core, and dice: do this to one apple and hollow out the insides of the rest of the remaining apples.
  • Make the apple filling: in a small saucepan, add the diced apples and ingredients and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender.
  • Fill the apples: spoon the apple mixture into the center of each apple. Cut the pie crust into strips and then create a lattice pattern over the tops of each apple. Brush egg wash onto the crusts and top with sugar.
  • Air fry apples: places apples in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 15 minutes at 350℉, or until the tops of crusts are golden brown. Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately.

Can You Store Leftover Apples?

These are best eaten right away, as the apples will become soggy once refrigerated. However, you can store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days, if needed.

To reheat: warm in the microwave for 30-40 seconds or in the air fryer at 350℉ for 5-7 minutes, or until warmed through.

What Kind of Apples are Best?

I used Granny Smith apples because I love the tart flavor they have. However, fuji, honey crisp, or pink lady apples would also work well.

How to Serve:

There are so many different ways to serve these stuffed apples!

  • With a dollop of Greek yogurt
  • With a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel drizzle
  • With a drizzle of chocolate sauce
  • With a drizzle of pure maple syrup

Tips for Making the Best Air Fried Apples:

  • For easy cleanup: use a parchment paper liner in your air fryer basket.
  • Want a richer flavor? Swap the granulated sugar for brown sugar.
  • Add more spices: use some apple pie spice or a pinch of nutmeg for a cozy touch.
  • Add some crunch: stir in some chopped pecans or walnuts to the apple pie filling just before spooning into the apples for an added crunch.
  • Don’t have a melon baller? Use a metal spoon to hollow out the insides of the apples.

Air Fryer Baked Apples

Yield: 5

Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
These Air Fryer Baked Apples are an easy dessert that tastes just like apple pie. Tender apples are coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture, topped with pie crust slices, and then air fried until golden. Easy to make and perfect for apple season!

Ingredients

  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • teaspoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon maple extract, (can also use 2 teaspoons maple syrup)
  • 1 refridgerated pie crust, (I used one crust from a 14.1 ounce box)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  • Peel, core, and dice one apple; then place into a small saucepan.
  • Add sugar, water, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, and maple extract to saucepan and stir to coat apples with mixture. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently until the apples are soft and the liquid is thick, about 7-8 minutes.
  • While the apple mixture is cooking, cut the tops off the remaining four apples and hollow out the insides of each apple with a melon baller. Spoon the thickened apple mixture into the center of each apple, filling to the top.
  • On a flour surface, roll out the pie crust using a rolling pin. Cut the dough into ⅓ inch thick, 4-5 inch long strips. Place three strips over one apple vertically, then two horizontally. Alternate strips to create a lattice pattern. Repeat with the remaining three apples.
  • In a small bowl, beat egg and milk to form an egg wash. Brush mixture over pie crust, then sprinkle with sugar (if desired).
  • Preheat air fryer (if your model has this option) to 350℉. Line the basket with parchment paper, if using, and carefully place apples in the basket. Air fry for 15 minutes at 350℉, or until crust turns golden brown. Remove apples from air fryer, top with vanilla ice cream (if desired), and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Granny Smith apples are best because of the tartness. However, honey crisp or fuji apples would also work.
  • If you don’t have a melon baller, you can use a regular metal spoon to hollow out the apples
  • These are best eaten right away, as the apples will become soggy once refrigerated. However, you can store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days, if needed.
