Garlic Herb Mashed Potatoes

I love an easy mashed potato recipe, especially when it’s loaded with flavor.

And these garlic mashed potatoes hit the spot. Simple to make, creamy, comforting, and bursting with garlic and herbs.

One of the key ingredients in this garlic potato recipe is milk. I’ve always loved milk, as it brings me back to my childhood. I enjoyed a glass of milk with breakfast and loved adding it to my cereal and oatmeal. Even now, milk plays an important part of my daily food consumption.

I always have milk on-hand, whether it be to enjoy by the glassful, or to use in cooking and baking. It’s an essential product to have in my kitchen and one that I always stock up on.

Back to these creamy garlic herb mashed potatoes. Milk is the star ingredient (besides the potatoes). It’s what gives it that creamy, ultra-fluffy texture. 2% is my milk of choice (from Target) for this homemade mashed potato recipe. It reminds me of a dish that I had growing up. Whether it be on holidays or family gatherings, mashed potatoes and milk always made an appearance.

What Kind of Potatoes Should I Use for Mashed Potatoes?

Russet, Yukon Gold, or red potatoes are best for making creamy garlic mashed potatoes.

Can I Make Mashed Potatoes Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! You can peel, quarter and add to a large pot with water and refrigerate until ready to cook. It’s important that the potatoes are fully submerged in water, otherwise they will brown if exposed to air.

You can also prepare the entire recipe ahead of time – peel, boil, and mash. Before serving, add reheat and then add additional butter. This will give them the freshly made taste.

How Long Can Potatoes Stay in Cold Water Before Cooking?

The potatoes can stay in cold water for up to 24 hours before boiling. I like to keep the pot in the refrigerator until ready to boil so that the water stays cold.

Tips for Making the Best Fluffy Garlic Herb Mashed Potatoes:

  • Milk! It’s what gives these potatoes that creamy and delicious texture. I like to use 2%, though any kind would work.
  • Choose a quality potato! Like I mentioned above, Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes are best for making the mashed kind.
  • Don’t overmix your sage mashed potatoes! You will end up with a gloppy texture.
  • Taste the potatoes before serving and add more salt/pepper or fresh herbs, if needed.

One bite and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with these Homemade Garlic and Herb Mashed Potatoes. The texture and the flavor just scream comfort food.

And with milk in this recipe, you can be sure that your family will enjoy, especially since we’re entering the holiday season. It might remind them of their favorite milk memories, too!
