The hubster is a huge sports fan. I’m talking gigantic, friends. Like, he loves every sport and watches most of them on TV. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…he is a walking sports trivia machine!
The hubster never ceases to amaze me with his vast sports knowledge. In fact, I always tease him that he missed his calling in life to go into sports broadcasting, or something along those lines.
And now that it’s February and college basketball is in full swing, the hubster is in basketball heaven. With the March games just a few short weeks away, he’s getting excited, and I am, too! I do like watching college basketball when tournaments are on, especially when good food is involved.
After all, it is all about the food, right? And drinks, because we can’t forget about the drinks.
These wonton taco cups are the perfect game day snack. Your favorite taco ingredients are layered in wonton wrappers and baked in mini form. Easy to make and even better to eat, you’ll enjoy these handheld cups that are packed with so much flavor!
And let’s be honest, taco bars are one the best game day foods, so why not make that a little bit easier with mini taco cups? If you’re a taco fanatic like I am, then these cups were made for you. Zesty, flavorful, and portable…perfection right there!
Ingredients in the Taco Cups
You all know my obsession with mini foods, so these wonton taco cups hit the spot. Seasoned ground beef, a mixture of salsa and cheese, and wonton cups. That’s the base for these taco bites!
Here’s what all you’ll need for this recipe:
- Wonton wrappers
- Ground beef
- Taco seasoningย
- Salsaย
- Shredded cheddar cheeseย
How to Make Wonton Taco Cups
This taco cups recipe is a cinch to make and it’s easy to customize with your favorite toppings.
- Lightly grease a 12-count regular muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray.
- Layer two wonton wrappers into each muffin tin, pressing down and up edges. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook and crumble ground beef. Drain and then return to skillet.
- Add taco seasoning and salsa to ground beef and stir to combine. Bring mixture to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.
- Fill each muffin tin with ground beef mixture. Top with shredded cheese.
- Bake until the cheese is melted and the wrappers are slightly browned.ย
- Remove cups from muffin tin and sprinkle on your favorite toppings.
Can Ground Turkey Be Used?
Of course! You’re welcome to make the taco bites using ground turkey, if desired.
Can This Recipe Be Made in Advance?
I recommend preparing this recipe fairly close to when you plan on serving it. The taco cups are best hot and fresh from the oven!
Tips for Making Mini Taco Cups
- Make sure to use lean ground beef and to drain any excess grease from the skillet. You don’t want the wonton wrappers to soak up tons of extra fat.ย
- Feel free to use any salsa you’d like in this recipe. Salsa verde, restaurant-style salsa, you name it!ย
- I like to top my wonton taco cups with black olives, cilantro, and a dash of sour cream. But, feel free to use your favorites. The possibilities are endless!

Mini foods are the best, and these taco cups would be such a crowd pleaser! My kids would love to see them for a regular weeknight dinner, too! And I’ll never complain about a glass of wine on the side! ๐ This is definitely how I want to watch basketball! Hah!
Wine and taco cups, what more could you ask for?! ๐ Thanks, Blair!
While not a huge sports fan, I will watch it if there’s food involved, lol. Hubby watches hockey, football, and some other sport that I can’t remember the name of ๐ Hahaha! Soccer became popular around here when I was older. I think if it was more popular when I was a kid, I probably would have played. I was a cheerleader for a little while too. Though, not a sports fanatic, like you, I’m a taco fanatic AND a lover of wine ๐ That brand is around here and it is delicious and given that it is Thirsty Thursday and almost the weekend, this post is perfect timing ๐ Love little food and this cups are adorable. Great idea using wonton cups! Can’t wait to give these a try. Extra cilantro for me please! Pinned! Have a great weekend!!
Yes! Food makes everything better, espsecially sports! ๐ Tacos and wine go perfectly together, right? Thanks for the kind words and pin, Dawn!
Perfect game day food!! love these!
Thanks!
I love sports AND Mexican food, so these are right up my alley! Bite sized apps are the way to my heart, especially with some great wine. These are a delicious way to enjoy any game!
Thank you, Marcie! Bite-sized apps are definitely my favorite, too!
Oh man!! I’m the same way about spots… I can mostly take them or leave them, though I think it’s fun to get into the team spirit (and especially when Boston/NE is doing well!). I feel lucky that though my husband LOVES sports, he’s mostly just a fanatic about football, which is on way less often than other sports! I loveee having people over and cooking for games and these little taco cups look perfect!
I agree, it is fun to get into team spirit, and I do love going to games, just not watching them so much! ๐ Thanks for the sweet comment, Sues!
I played tennis growing up too! My parents were actually very good at it, so they forced me to play. lol. I traded it in for soccer and played that most of my life. I like watching most sports… minus golf even though that was my father’s favorite sport ever. ๐ Anyways, mini anything just makes me swoon, especially if it’s something mini AND involves taco flavors!!!! YUM! These taco cups are adorable, Gayle, and they look absolutely delicious! Perfect for a party, or a snack, or for dinner, because let’s get real, I could totally eat about 30 of these and call it dinner. <3 Pinned! Cheers, friend!
I haven’t played tennis in so long, but my husband is pretty good at it (he played too) so I refuse to play with him! ๐ Golf is my Grandpa’s favorite sport and I just can’t watch that at all…it’s a snooze fest for me! Thanks for the taco love and pin, friend!
These taco cups looks perfect for party Gayle! Loving the cheese!
Thank you, Manali!
I am with your hubby – we are in college basketball heaven, too! We can’t get enough – and don’t even get me started on my beloved Orangemen! Did you see that game against Duke last night? Oh my! You can bet I’ll be making this awesome appetizer as we move into the tournaments! Love these!!
You know, I do like watching college basketball (my husband LOVES it) but I usually only watch come NCAA time, unless I get sucked into it with my husband! ๐ Thanks for the kind words, Annie!
I’m not a sports fan either, but I’ll watch whatever if there is good food involved haha. These taco cups have my stomach growling, Gayle! And wine is a must in my life! ๐
Thanks, Keri! Food makes everything better! ๐
You had me at cheesy! I’m not a huge sports fan, but if you are serving these taco cups, count me in!
Taco cups make sports better, right? ๐ Thanks, Rachelle!

Thank you for sweet comment, Gaila! These sound perfect for game days!
These mini cups look amazing! I’ve always wanted to try something like this using wonton wrappers. Great flavors and perfect for a glass of wine. Not a huge fan of sports either, but love sports appetizers! Pinned!
Thank you, Mira! I’m officially hooked on wonton cups, they’re so fun to use and eat! ๐
I assume you put the taco seasoning mix in when you add the salsa. I didn’t see it in the directions of when to add it. These sound wonderful, since I love tacos. Thanks for this recipe
Sorry about that, Pat! I went ahead and updated the recipe instructions. Hope you love this recipe and thanks for stopping by!
